The intent is to reduce the combustible material that can allow wind-blown embers to ignite a home. California law required the Board to establish this ember-resistant zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font wp-elements-e2211b003730fecc1ae7f071eac7c2cc\" style=\"color:#2a8b03;font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><em>The proposed requirements include:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\" class=\"wp-block-list has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\">\n<li>No combustible materials in the full 5 feet, including fallen leaves and needles, combustible mulch, wood chips, firewood, and stored wood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roofs and gutters must be kept free of combustible debris.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No firewood in Zone 0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Areas beneath decks, balconies, pergolas and stairs must be free of vegetation and combustible items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing trees are not automatically prohibited. As a \u201cdeep and steep\u201d town with heavy winds, Floriston is at high risk of flying embers in the event of a nearby wildfire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><strong>Steps to Make Your Zone 0 More Resistant to Embers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\" class=\"wp-block-list has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\">\n<li>Keep the area immediately next to the structure as ignition-resistant as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No combustible bark or mulch around the structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove dead and dying weeds, grass, plants, shrubs, trees, branches and vegetative debris such as leaves, needles, cones and bark.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove dry leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove branches within 10 feet of chimneys, stovepipes and roofs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove or prune flammable plants and shrubs near windows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move firewood and lumber to Zone 2; consider moving other combustible items such as garbage containers, boats, RVs and vehicles outside Zone 0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><strong>Step #2 &#8211; Make access obvious<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\">Keep the address visible from the road and keep driveways and approach areas usable for emergency response vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font wp-elements-f734dd86085777d130143369f7912ae2\" style=\"color:#38c202;font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckeefire.org\/dspaceassistance\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">Address sign &amp; assistance&nbsp;<\/mark><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><strong>Step #3 &#8211; Harden the Home, Not Just the Yard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\">Truckee Fire\u2019s home-hardening program focuses on the parts of a structure that are vulnerable to embers, radiant heat and direct flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\" class=\"wp-block-list has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\">\n<li>Vents &amp; openings: Review ember-resistance at vents and other openings. Truckee Fire specifically lists 1\/8-inch metal mesh vent screens or smaller among eligible upgrade examples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decks, fences &amp; edges: Reduce combustible pathways into the home. Truckee Fire identifies low-elevation deck enclosure, noncombustible fencing\/gates and hardscaping within 5 feet as rebate-eligible examples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\"><strong>Step #4 &#8211; Get a property-specific plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-heebo-font-family has-custom-font\" style=\"font-family:Heebo;font-size:16px\">Truckee Fire offers free defensible-space inspections and customized reports.
